Studying Skillful Teaching (6-Sessions)

Nothing is more complex, challenging, or important than assuring high levels of learning for each and every student. And no single factor has a greater impact on student learning than skillful teaching.

The Studying Skillful Teaching program is Research for Better Teaching’s cornerstone program for building teachers’ capacity – the knowledge and skills as well as the courage and conviction – to promote students’ motivation, learning, and increased achievement. It is based on the belief that teaching is a process of decision-making; and that skillful teachers never stop learning through experimentation, data analysis, study, and collegial sharing about what works best for their students. This reflective dialogue is consistently rated by our clients as an invaluable asset for building common and coherent language among their educators. K-12 Educators, Coaches, and Leaders (especially those in years 2-5 of professional practice) are ideal candidates for this program. This 6-session course provides educators and leaders the language and tools they need to become skillful instructional practitioners.

Presented by Jody Wirt, Research for Better Teaching

Podcast PD: Foundational Literacy

According to the NAEP National Reading Report Card, only 35% of 4th grade public school students can read at or above grade level.  It’s important for educators to not only explore what might be behind this staggering percentage, but also identify what they can do to support and grow the foundational reading skills of their students. No matter how many books we surround children with, they will not master reading without instruction.

During this self-paced course, participants will listen and reflect on American Public Media’s podcast "Sold a Story" and the existing body of research about how children learn to read. Then, participants will explore strategies from the book Shifting the Balance: 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading into the Balanced Literacy Classroom and plan how to implement those practices into their classrooms.

As part of this workshop, we will assemble a goody box for each participant which includes: a copy of the book, a surprise gift, and information on the course. Boxes will be available for pickup at our office, 300 Heart Blvd. Loves Park, IL 61111 on August 3, 2023

REACH Bootcamp: Developing a Schoolwide Trauma-Responsive Action Plan

There is a growing need for schools to focus on becoming more trauma responsive, but where do you start? REACH, a statewide initiative, promotes the development of SEL and trauma responsiveness through targeted, data-driven action planning. This full day event leads teams through the assessment and action planning process.  Additionally, teams will review common language surrounding trauma and engage in guided consensus to identify targeted areas for growth. Start the year off right by identifying SEL goals for the year! Members of the Area 2 SEL Hub will guide you every step of the way!

This workday is intended for SEL teams, building leadership, and SIP teams in Area 2. When you click on the register button, you will be directed to a Google Form application. Please fill out one application for yourself and your team that will be in attendance (note that an administrator must be part of the team for decision making purposes. Teams should also consist of at least 3 members). Once we have reviewed the application, your team will be sent an official registration link for each member to sign up.

Registration fee paid for courtesy of the Area 2 SEL Hub.

Write Learning, Write Now: Secondary Writing Bootcamp

Good writers don’t wing it—they have a plethora of skills. They list, picture, circle, strategize and revise to make language come alive. They know what to use and when. Like ace athletes, they are highly trained, but the key, of course, is practice—plus some coaching from their teachers.

Students should be writing daily, in all their classes. During this session participants will walk away with a playbook of engaging writing strategies (both for writing endurance and sprints), as well as moves to introduce academic vocabulary and make it stick.

After this two day bootcamp intended for secondary educators, you’ll be ready to help students up their writing game—and make literacy relevant, valuable, and authentic.

Presented by Dr. Rebecca Harper, Author and National Literacy Expert
